More than a documentary, this is a powerful cinematic journey through the remarkable life of Tommy Tycho—Holocaust survivor, pioneering television musical director, acclaimed film composer, and the maestro whose music helped define Australia's cultural landscape. Through rare archival footage, captivating performances and heartfelt interviews, the film uncovers the extraordinary story behind the baton.
The documentary highlights Tycho's pioneering role in Australian television, where he became the Seven Network's first Musical Director in 1956. Viewers discover how he composed, arranged and conducted music for countless television productions during the golden era of live broadcasting, influencing programs such as The Mavis Bramston Show, Revue '61, Startime and Number 96. His work behind the scenes helped establish the musical identity of Australian television while supporting generations of performers.
Beyond his television career, the film explores Tycho's contribution to Australian cinema through scores for films including Young Einstein and Reckless Kelly. It also examines his collaborations with international stars such as Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey and Sammy Davis Jr., alongside Australian icons including Olivia Newton-John, Peter Allen, Julie Anthony, Barry Crocker and John Farnham. Interviews with musicians including James Morrison, Simon Tedeschi, Jane Rutter and Julie Anthony illustrate the profound respect Tycho earned throughout the entertainment industry.
